While I was browsing online yesterday I stumbled across a competition with some amazing prizes that Thomas Cook are running for bloggers. To take part you need to share at least one photo for each of the four elements. The deadline is midnight tonight (eek!) so sadly there was no time to compose fresh images to suit the brief, but I did manage to raid my photos and find a few to fit the bill…
The beach huts at West Wittering are always a popular subject for photographers and it’s a challenge to capture them in an original way. I took this photo in November last year and at first glance people often struggle to work out what’s happening in the picture, but it’s simply that the image is reversed. The description for this category in the competition talks of water being “fluid and formless” so I like the idea of playing with perspectives.
“Lock & Chain” (Earth)
This category “represents the hard, solid objects of the earth.” I have already seen some stunning entries of beautiful landscapes so I am pretty confident that this is a group I don’t stand a chance of winning! My entry is a picture of some wonderful texture and colour of a locked door which I took in Omodos village in Cyprus. I love the way the blues and oranges sit side by side in parts of the door.
This photo was taken on a very cold winter night in Northern Scotland. The grounds and ruins of Duffus Castle are open to the public at all hours of the day and night, making it a beautiful place to explore and play with light painting. The “fire” in this shot is a sphere created by a torch swung on a rope.
The brief for air describes it as “things that grow, expand and enjoy freedom of movement” I debated including a shot of the Red Arrows for this one, but thought about their rigid metal chasis and uniform routines and instead plumped for the multi-coloured strands of a maypole dancing in the summer air. This photo was taken at the Weald & Downland Museum in Sussex.
The prizes for the #ExploreTheElements competition include a choice of a Macbook Pro (my main motivation for entering as mine is on its last legs!) a Fujifilm X-T1 camera and an Apple iPhone 6, with and an overall prize of an incredible £5000 travel fund. In the unlikely event I were to win the top prize, I’d use it to tick two things off my travel wishlist. The rather modest desire to spend a weekend in Barcelona, but also a longer family trip to the east coast of Canada to visit Prince Edward Island.
As part of entry to the competition I have to nominate another five bloggers to take part. I apologise for the absurdly short notice, but if they want to take part they are as follows…
