Being three…

On holiday in France

Yesterday we returned from France after a really lovely week on board a boat on a French canal (I’ll tell you lots more about this in a post later in the week.) It was Theo’s first experience of living on a boat and fortunately the change of scene didn’t cause any problems. I had worried slightly that things like showers (rather than nightly baths) vacuum toilets and cabin beds might throw him a little, but he just treated them all as an exciting novelty. The change of routine also meant lots of late nights with his teenage cousins and somehow we managed to get through the week unscathed, although he did fall asleep standing up whilst leaning on Jim’s leg one afternoon and slept through a big chunk of the journey home.

France aside, life is pretty exciting for this boy right now. The triple whammy of turning four, starting school and becoming a big brother are all looming large on his horizon and there are times when he brims over with excitement and the full realisation of what lies before him. All things considered, three is a pretty great age. He’s full of positivity, excitement and awe and deliciously cuddly. He has his naughty moments (of course) but there are a healthy number of them and nothing that makes us worry. It’s been lovely to enjoy his company for the past week whilst he is still an only child, next summer the dynamics will be very different.

What a beautiful post. Made me want to go and give my three year old a big squeeze. I think three is a wonderful age but then four comes and then I think four is the best age… Then five….
