Golden puppies made with Golden Oreos

I have received product from Oreo for this post. It is an entry to the Foodies100 Wonderfilled recipe challenge sponsored by Oreo, which marks the launch of two exciting new flavours: Peanut Butter and Golden. The delicious new flavours are available in all major supermarkets at an RRP of £1.08. To find out more, visit www.facebook.com/oreo

Recently we were asked by Oreo to create a Wonderfilled recipe using one of their two new flavours, Golden and Peanut Butter. We chose the Golden flavour and wanted to create a tasty treat based around the colour of their new snack. So what animal do you think of when someone says “golden” to you? For us there was no competition! Golden Retriever puppies every time!

My golden puppies are based around a marshmallow rice cake and are really easy and fast to make. Make sure you have a few ingredients to spare though, I had a battle keeping everyone from helping themselves to “spare” bits as I put them together!

This recipe makes between 6-8 puppies depending on how thinly you spread the mixture and how neatly you cut the circles! You will need a shallow baking tray with sides, baking paper to line it, a cookie cutter about 8.5cm in diameter and the following ingredients…

So lets get started! The first thing you need to do is to melt the 3 tablespoons of butter or margarine in a saucepan on the hob, then add the marshmallows and melt these too…

Finally turn off the heat and mix in the rice crisp cereal. Give it a good mix so it is all covered in the melted marshmallow mixture and then spread it in a lined shallow baking tray with sides. You need the baking tray to be shallow so you can make the faces of the puppies thin…

Allow your tray of cereal mix to cool in the fridge for half an hour and then take your round cookie cutter and cut circles from the mix. Whilst you still have the cutter holding the shape together crush the mixture a little with your fingers to make it flat and dense and to fill in any gaps in the mixture.

The next step is to decorate your puppies. Don’t worry too much about making your puppies look perfect. After I had photographed these, my three year-old was given a free choice of which puppy he could eat and he did not choose the most the one with the most perfect icing eyes or the least wonky smile!

You will need one Golden Oreo per puppy. The first thing you need to do is slice it through the middle keeping the filling on one half of the biscuit, this half will be your puppy nose. With the bare half of the biscuit use a bread knife to gently saw (rather than cut) the biscuit in half so you get a clean line without the biscuit breaking, these two pieces will be your ears.

Next the eyes! It is easier to apply the icing whilst holding each individual Smartie rather than with them already in place on the sweet rice cakes. Finally slice dried mango into two pieces, one short, one long in order to make the puppy’s mouth.
