Me & Mine – January

Me & Mine – January

by Clare Mansell

It’s literally taken me years to finally get round to joining the Me & Mine project hampered by every excuse you can think of, but we’re off to a good start for 2017, it’s the beginning of a new year and we’ve got a photo of all of us!

Thinking about blogging this year it was very clear to me that I wanted to focus on creative projects and quality over quantity. I’m happier ignoring my stats, opting out of charts and working on a small number of collaborations, so the Me & Mine project fits nicely into that.

The idea is to capture one photo every month of all of us to have a record of our family throughout the year. Family photos with all of us together are rare so this will give us a great reason to make them happen.

Guest room makeover – Reveal (with video)

It’s been so long since we started making over our guest room that you’d be forgiven for having forgotten all about it, but between alternating periods of frantic activity and doing nothing at all, we have been slowly but surely moving towards a finish and tomorrow our housesitters who provided us with the motivation to start sorting the room out to begin with, arrive for a long weekend, so I’m delighted to say it’s finished!

Just to refresh your memories, our spare room is on the ground floor of our house. It has the advantage of a good en suite shower room, but the considerable disadvantage of a large window that looks out on a brick wall! We used to have a single bed in here, which was fine when Jim’s dad came to stay, but the room felt unloved and like it was trying to perform several jobs at once.

The Siblings Project – January

The Siblings Project – January

by Clare Mansell

This year I’m going to be joining two photography projects organised by Lucy at Dear Beautiful. As luck would have it and entirely independent of my decision to join her projects, Lucy has also decided to join in with the Home Life Project which I run at the start of each month, so between us we’ll hopefully both be capturing some great photos this year of moments we might otherwsie not have recorded.

The link up for the Siblings Project opens in the middle of the month, so I am a little late joining, but fortunately it stays open for a couple of weeks so there’s plenty of time for late comers!

Beginning a year of simplicity – January

Over the last year or so I’ve found myself starting to reassess the way we live, by making small but significant changes in our home life. Last summer I cleared out a load of my clothes and introduced a capsule wardrobe, we attempted zero waste party bags at Theo’s birthday, I stopped colouring my hair (18 months ago!) and we cut back on what we bought at Christmas. I also discovered the Minimalists and the great Make Do & Mend Life group on Facebook.

As we started 2017 I wanted to document these changes, but I struggled to label exactly what I was doing. In the end I settled on a year of simplicity and so for the next 12 months I’m going to do a blog update and a vlog every month talking about how we are reducing waste, adopting some minimalist principals and finding ways of living more simply.

Home Life Project – January

Home Life Project – January

by Clare Mansell

To start this post I’d like to welcome anyone who is new to this project this year, you are all welcome and I really hope you enjoyed stretching your creativity over the weekend and captured some moments that you might otherwise have missed.

I took my photos yesterday and we had typical January weather, we got out of bed in near darkness, walked the dogs in drizzle and fog and watched the night close in while we had our afternoon cup of tea. Not very cheerful weather, but an honest and accurate image of what an average day is like at this time of year.

Activity wise, Theo had his weekly iPad time, then he and the dogs burned off their energy on a near empty beach and we all ate a great brunch at a local cafe. At 14 months Alice is very much becoming her own person and enjoys ‘playing’ Connect 4 with Theo, meanwhile her brother’s big news this month, is that gap in his front teeth, he had his first visit from the tooth fairy last week!
