Our garden in April – A year’s progress

Last April I started documenting the development of our garden. Looking back on the posts from last year has given me a great opportunity to see real evidence of how far things have come. Comparing photos twelve months on, I can see how our work is slowly paying off and plants are growing. We are currently debating getting in some outside help for a big project and so I thought it would be a good time to start keeping a record again.

The Siblings Project – April

by Clare Mansell

At about this time every year we make an annual trip to Stanstead House, a country estate near us and our favourite spot for walking the dogs and spotting and photographing bluebells. It’s frightening how quickly a year passes and how much Theo has grown since the first photos we took. Somehow photographing your children in familiar landscapes highlights just how much they have changed.

A homemade hot cross buns challenge

A homemade hot cross buns challenge

by Clare Mansell

Hot cross buns are one of my guilty pleasures. While some people might moan when they appear in supermarkets too quickly after Christmas, I always welcome their short season and in our family they often become a Friday afternoon teatime treat. But despite the fact I make bread several times a week, I have never considered turning my hand to homemade hot cross buns. Why? Well two reasons really. I can’t shift the mental block I have that sweet dough is trickier than savoury and secondly, the crosses make them look (as ridiculous as it sounds) complicated.

Home Life Project – April

Home Life Project – April

by Clare Mansell

Last month I made a comment about how the weather had improved dramatically between March and April’s Home Life Project last year and low and behold, this year it has also delivered! We had a fantastic day on Sunday, only slightly marred by the fact I was suffering a bit from all the rapeseed that is in flower around our house. I have never had hayfever before, but for some reason this year it’s really hit me with a combination of cough, sneezing and tickly throat… but it does look stunning, so I hope I can cope with it for the next couple of months!

We spent most of the day outside, with a barbecue and some gardening which the kids also got involved with. By the time they went to bed, not only were they exhausted, but we were too. Lots of fresh air and exercise is always a winning combination fora  good nights sleep!

As far at the creative challenge for this month, I failed to mention when I wrote the post on Friday that I’d actually been inspired to select it after watching a youtube video about how foreground framing is used in filming and so it’s been interesting not only using it to compose photos, but also seeing it being used a lot on tv this weekend.
